Luce di Luna

In perusing countertop options (and dreaming just a bit), I stumbled across a stunning quartzite from Brazil called Luce di Luna. Here are some drop-dead-gorgeous pics from a kitchen I found over on this forum. It's still 'in progress' at this point in the photos, but oh, that stone! *swoon!*

I See a Red Door, and I Want it Painted...

Edit: I think I've decided to stick with the red (at least for now), since I know I won't really be happy with teal or another color. I'm going to try balancing it out with some bright red and lots of sunny yellow flowers (and new pots out front).

Edit #2: We picked out another shade of red & had quite an adventure doing so! More to come on that soon!

TEAL??

Well, I painted the door red. And I'm not too crazy about it. I'm waiting a day or so to see if it grows on me. I didn't pick an orangey red, but against the terra-cotta-ish brick, it's looking orangey.

I've already picked out a backup color- a teal. I'm not nearly as fun or bold as I'd like (nor is it my style), but I think it blends a bit better. After more mock-ups, I definitely nixed the yellow & blue, and Jesse hates the greens. What are your thoughts??? Should I keep the red or paint it teal?

Church Doors

While running errands today (and with all the door talk), I couldn't help but notice how lovely all the old church doors around here are! Perhaps it has something to do with the welcoming atmosphere churches should provide... but either way, churches really do tend to have stunning entryways!

Isn't this one stunning? It's my favorite.

Front Door Love

I just love the welcoming, cheerful appearance of a brightly colored front door- I mean, who doesn't?

While I love the exterior of our house, I'm not super-crazy about our front door color- a dark, subtle red that does its best to blend in with the brick. It looks very nice, but mostly because it's camouflaged into the front of the house. For some months now, I've been trying to decide whether or not to change it- and what to change it to. I thought it was time to solicit your wonderful opinions with some Photoshop mockups!

Here's the current door... lovely, but a bit bland.

I've always wanted a classic, bright, cherry red door. I didn't think it'd flow with the beige trim/columns/shutters, but I think it just might work!

Kelly green has just the right amount of punch with a classic feel!

Royal blue feels rich and formal... but a bit too patriotic?

A warn golden yellow would be so cheerful (but excruciatingly hard to Photoshop!)

I'd love to hear some outside opinions- be sure to comment and let me know your favorite! I'll keep you updated on whether or not I decide to tackle it... and what color we choose!

Periodic Wall Decals

I really dislike it when a home's decor seems to spring entirely from one party (usually the chick), I mean... doesn't someone else live there too? Because of that, I really try to keep an eye out for things Jesse will think are awesome (although thats sometimes harder than it sounds). While I don't plan on putting this in my home anytime soon, I thought he (and every other scientist out there) would get a HUGE kick out of these Periodic System Wall Stickers over on ferm LIVING.

Periodically, I do consider how it'd look in our home. :D

Kitchen Plans

So the low down on our kitchen plans: We're currently getting bids for 2 options.

Plan A) lower the breakfast bar to counter level and replace all counters with bright white corian

Plan B) leave the tile and raised bar, replace purple laminate surfaces with white-ish corian, quartz, or granite (I usually hate granite, but today's guy showed me some that actually had a look reminiscent of carrera marble!)

It will all come down to cost, because as much as we want to be rid of the tile, it's not such a huge priority for us that we're willing to spend a ton on it (taking out that tile is the most expensive part of the project). Any thoughts? Suggestions? We'll just have to see how the quotes come in. I'm sure it'll be at least a few more weeks before we make a decision- I'll keep yall updated!

A Stormy Weekend...

Ok so it's not so stormy anymore, but yesterday evening we had a very strong, very short storm!

amazing photo via Bridgepix - our storm didn't look nearly this cool!

And when I mean strong & short, I mean it uprooted one of my window box spruces, tossed my fiberglass pots/boxwoods from the front porch down into the street, and took down trees and huge branches, caused torrential wind/rain/flooding, and took down gutters... in about 10 minutes total. It was pretty scary- particularly when I had to go out in it to try and rescue my poor plants!

Hope you're all having gorgeous weather wherever you are!

Kitchen Love

In my usual style, I'm already looking towards my next project before the current ones are done. Jesse & I are looking into some very minor kitchen updates... specifically, those purple laminate counters! We've got a couple options we're looking into- which I'll share more about later -but for now, I'd like to just share some lovely pics from my inspiration files. I love the bright, simple, colorful feel these kitchens have! None of them take themselves too seriously, which is a good quality for kitchens IMHO. :)

Sorry for the lack of documentation (had these for quite a while & keep them mostly just for my own visual delight)- most of these are from Apartment Therapy (possibly a few from Domino), and the yellow back splash is an Ikea ad. Also quite possible several have been in more than one place! :)

On Cheap Paints...

I'll be honest, when Bethany picked "quality of materials" as the theme for the blog carnival, I was pretty hesitant. I mean, who wants to ever say that they don't use the highest quality? But the reality is that most of us probably don't - and for good reason. For this post, I thought I'd focus more on the 'why' reasons behind my choosing materials, as there are 2 major concerns I deal with.

First, I consider my buyer. I want my typical buyer to be "me" - or someone like me. I want my friends to be able to buy my work; I want their friends to be able to buy my work. Unfortunately though, most of us can't afford to be dropping large sums of money on fancy paintings. Even those who've graduated probably don't have art in the top echelon of 'things I need.' A big concern in pricing my work deals with the cost of paint- for me this is even more important because I tend to use paint quite freely. Simply put, I use a lot of paint. Stepping up the quality of paint means stepping up the price (substantially- and often too much).

Second (but probably more importantly), I consider my love of painting. I like to paint... I paint fast and a lot. In my recent effort to really boost listings in my shop, I've been sitting on a lot of paintings- but had I chosen more expensive paints, I very easily could not have afforded to do so. Buy choosing cheaper paints, I can afford to paint as many fun, chic girls as I want- even during a slow spell. And since doing what I love is my focus (not turning a huge profit), that's the way for me to go!

Now, as a disclaimer, I'll say that these are very general concerns and don't apply to all my work. It's a whole other ball game with oil and specialty paintings. I'll also add that while I advocate cost-effective materials pretty freely, I only use materials I'm familiar and happy with. You'll find the same 'cheap paints' still gracing my own walls several years old and still lovely!

Brushes however, are a whole other story... an expensive brush is worth every penny! ;)

Spring Is...

My mom is amazing.

For Easter, she had my dad track down an old out-of-print book we used to check out from the library all the time as kids. Each of us got a copy, and I think it's safe to say, it's one of the loveliest children's books I've ever read (and you'll see why). It's called "Spring Is..." with darling illustrations by Janina Domanska. Here are a few of my fav pages...

Polywood Adirondack Chairs

Check out our awesome new curved back adirondack chairs! You can also see where the tiki stool ended up & check out the new dwarf cherry tree. The chairs are from the DIY Home Center, and they're made of Polywood- which is recycled milk jugs- how cool is that (and so sustainable!)? Every time we recycle a milk jug, I now wonder if it's destined to lounge in a garden somewhere lol. I hope so, because I think they look just swell in the garden, and Pepper & Pickle are pretty pleased with them too!

(FYI these little imps and the chairs are featured on today's Desire to Inspire Pets on Furniture post!)

What I love about these chairs is their 'look.' The bright white looks so fresh and clean (although there are many colors to choose from) & really pops with our new little fence and trellis. They're super easy to clean too- just blast 'em with the hose- so through the wind, rain, and storm since we've had them, they've never looked dirty. I've always loved the classic adirondack style too- not too modern, but not too stuffy or traditional either. :)

But the best part... they feel as good as they look. I'll admit I was a little iffy on how sturdy they'd be before we got them. We get some crazy wind here, and I really wanted to invest in something substantial that wouldn't need replacing 2 years down the line. You can get cheapie plastic adirondack chairs for $15 a pop (from the usual big box stores), but they always feel... well, cheap. The material is always thin, and they fade in the sun. Not these. These boys are heavy- they're not gonna get blown around (but they're still light enough to easily move around the yard). They feel strong and thick- they won't sag or get too flexible over time, but they're nice and smooth too (no splinters!). Plus- since the color goes all the way through- you don't have to worry about fading and things like that! They're really made to beat the elements, time, and your changing style lol.

Bottom line: I've been spending a lot of time lately lounging outside now that we have these chairs. The look is classic and relaxing, they're comfortable, the materials are not only green but high quality, and they're built to last! Polywood definitely gets my vote (and Pepper & Pickle's too!) for outdoor furniture!

You can go check out the whole line of Polywood furniture over at www.DIYhomecenter.com!
You can also check out the how-to assembly video Jesse & I put together! :)

Please note that I received these chairs at a significant discount.

Flickr Flowers!

I'm so in love with the weather right now- it's been unseasonably warm here in Pittsburgh. Apparently this is 'summer weather' -which makes me even more excited that I might actually like summer! Spring is here & for once in my life I have flowers... that I grew... in a garden.

Here they are (just a few, I know, but my first tulip- yay!) along with the Pepper dog and our new little fence. And I use the term 'fence' loosely since it's 14" high- but it's enough to keep the pups in. To celebrate spring I thought I'd share some more lovely flowers via some flickr searching....

...and a quick tribute to Texas (and one of the things I do miss):

BLUEBONNETS!!
(These are my lovely sisters Nell & Kitt taking the traditional Texas bluebonnet photos. Sidenote: Nell just finished running a 10K and was the first woman to finish! Woohoo!)
