Learning to "plumb"
We've hit a snag in our kitchen counter adventure. Turns out with an under-mount sink (and slightly deeper at that), our garbage disposal drain will be significantly lower that the kitchen drain coming out of the wall. Oh... and water doesn't flow uphill, so our options are to...
a) Pay a plumber lots of money
b) Get rid of the disposal and learn to compost
(Jesse isn't going to like this- so if you compost, I'd love to hear your experience!)
c) Open the wall & lower the drain ourselves
I bet we're going to do option C. Jesse moved the sink in our basement & has a basic knowledge of plumbing, but I'm trying to do as much research as I can to learn how to do it. P-traps, and T's, and trap-arms, oh my! After a night of researching, I'm all "plumbed" out, so here are some more enjoyable 'plumbing' ideas. I wish our project was this fun...

Plumbing can be tricky and if done wrong cause other problems in other parts of the house. I have a disposal but hardly ever use it. We have a wooded are in back, so we compost. Just have a plate or bag set up each time we do food prep and take it and dump it at the end of the meal. We put leaves and grass clippings on the pile as well and stir around.
I love those yellow speakers! It looks like a water hose
Red Pipes, blue dots, awesome :)
I feel your pain! :) T.
Such a unique and colorful combo! Great designs for a modern urban loft!
I love to compost! Feels like I'm giving back much needed top soil. I bought a terrific stainless steel compost bucket for my kitchen scraps that has a filter (so no smells) from Crate and Barrel (or was it Williams Sonoma???) Anyway...my garden and the raccoons love me.
Oh my! Does turning that faucet make the light go on? I would probably go nuts with that thing.
Good luck with your plumbing conundrum!
We compost just about everything from egg shells to food scraps! We have an old tin bucket with lid (and handle) from a junk shop that we leave on the kitchen counter. The fancy compost buckets you buy in stores have filters that need to be replaced every so often- which get expensive very quickly! Instead, we just line the bottom of our compost bin with a coffee filter, and every couple days we take it out and empty it into our handmade compost heap. It's really easy- and well worth it! Just rinse the bucket out when you bring it back in, and ta-da! Life is better.
Oh I've seen that rack for pots made with plumbing before and I love it. So pretty!
Love the plumbing inspired finds. The speakers are really cool!
If it helps your decision any - I work for a municipality (in the sustainability dept) and the people in the water department tell me that garbage disposals are evil - they basically create sludge that foul up the water treatment plants. So while it's convenient for the homeowners, it's not only a waste of organic material that could be composted, it's actually really expensive to clean up in the water system. Not that I'm biased or anything. =)
