HELP! A Kitchen Light Dilemma...
In our kitchen, we currently have a very nice, contemporary looking ceiling fan. However, the 'can' style light kit not only provides awful lighting- 2 of the sockets have blown! Instead of rewiring, we went in search of a new light kit only to find it an impossible style and finish to match. We found tons of reviews of others claiming the task impossible and hating on how poor the light quality is. SO.... no more ceiling fan. We're taking it down in favor of a new pendant lamp, but the decision is tricky! The new light needs to be bright (we need more light!), it needs to look good (first thing you see when you walk in the front door), and it needs to go with the Ikea Calypso light over the sink.
Here's the kitchen now:
And here are the current runners (hastily Photoshopped in- sizes are very approximate):
$270, 20.5" diameter, 3- 100 watt bulbs
(pricey, but the best light quality we think)
$160, 14" diameter, 6 - 40 watt bulbs
(likely good lighting, fun & unique, but small)
$208, 24" diameter, 9- 60 watt bulbs
(a big energy sucker since CFLs probably won't fit- but high on light & fun style)
4- Eden Pendant
$50, 19.75" diameter, 1- 100 watt bulb
(super cheap & simple, but only 1 light & it seems the least compatible with the Calypso)
$330, 25" diameter, 1 - 150 watt bulb
(clearly the best looking, classic, but only 1 light, expensive, and I'm afraid it might get filthy in a kitchen)
Any thoughts??? The Nelson is the obvious choice in my mind, but the #1 deterrent is the placement so close to the stove- plus the lighting probably isn't as bright as it could be (I'd have to save a bit for it, but that wouldn't deter me). Regardless, balancing price, lighting, looks, and Jesse's opinion is trickier than I thought (and I can't believe how many lights have only 1 measly 60 watt bulb!). Craigslist and ebay have been fruitless or inappropriate for kitchens. I could use really some outside thoughts or suggestions....
EDIT: We went with the Nelson pendant... it was my first choice, and we think it'll look the best with the calypso. The sputnik looking ones would be a dusting nightmare, and #1 (the close runner-up) was too boring for me to look at first thing when i walk in the door. Plus, we want to feel like we have UFOs over our heads :D It's ordered & on it's way- can't wait to share how it looks & thanks SO much for all your thoughts & opinions!

I like #1 the best for it's simplicity. It could really go with anything and everything in the kitchen now and later should you choose to change other things. But if it hangs that low it could be a problem. #5 is a very close second because I really love the texture the design provides to the room.
Good luck with the decision and make sure to let us all know what the final decision is!
P.S. I love the yellow in the kitchen!
I like number 5!
The Nelson (#5) is my favourite. I think it looks the best with the fixture over the sink. While I really like some of the others, they don't seem to work as well in the room.
I like 3 and 5. You're so clever!!
#3 is cute, but I think #4 or #5 goes better with the other. Hope you find one you like :)
My favorite is number four because it's so simple yet chic!
#4- I don't particularly like it, but I think it looks the best. Good luck with your decision!
I really like the 4th and 5th options. Simple is always what gets me. If I had to choose one I think it would be #4! Really cool how you displayed them all. Thanks for letting us help!
Such a tough decision! You found some really great lights and I love how you photoshopped them into the picture of your kitchen! Awesome idea!
I think I'm going to have to go with #1 the George Kovacs Large 3 Light Pendant. Although I LOVE # 5 the Nelson light and it is certainly a classic I can understand you not wanting to pay that much and have it get ruined in the kitchen (it would be perfect in a dining room though) and I think that having the 3 lights that #1 gives you will be much more practical. Having enough light in the kitchen is so important!
Best of luck with picking your new light!

I vote #1. Fits best with your other, plus it's clean and quality.
You're so entertaining, Tess!
We're in search of an entry pendant...so tough to choose!

#1 is definitely my choice too: it has a classic simplicity that is timeless, I think. They're all great, but yeah: #1. :-)

I love number 5!
I love the nelson, but I think because of the concerns you mentioned # 4 is the way to go. The nelson will probably yellow quite quickly that close to the stove.
Your kitchen looks fabulous!
the nelson pendant was the one I choose before seeing your update. wonderful choice...now we need some pictures :)
